The SCDS playground serves the entire range of students, K-8, and is limited in size between buildings and a very steep vegetated slope. Almost complete coverage with poured-in-place surfacing maximizes cheerfulness and play value in this shaded and constricted play space. Equipment was selected to safely engage a lot of kids, freeing up open area for basketball, wall ball and other hard surface activities. The surfacing flows seamlessly from fall-protected areas to “hard” areas, creating a more spacious feeling. We took advantage of an existing remnant wall to create a quiet area for kids who want to get out of the fray, have contact with some natural materials—boulders and plants—or sit on the planter with built-in chess boards.
