CLIENT:
Columbia City Business Association

Johnson+Southerland developed a concept, illustrations and a proposal for development of an urban plaza in the heart of Columbia City, an historic neighborhood center in Seattle. We worked with the Columbia City Business Association, who want to transform the site, which is an eyesore and a gap, into a vital link in the charming urban fabric of Columbia City. The design resonates with Columbia City's unique historic themes-being a sawmill town at the end of the trolley line from Seattle-with rail and saw shapes embedded in the paving and a super-sized historic photo display. It accommodates the neighborhood's needs for a central gathering place and expresses sustainability values through the use of green walls and a permeable paving system.

The proposal was prepared for consideration in Seattle Park's highly competitive Opportunity Grant program. Based on the strength of the proposal, Seattle Parks selected this project for $450,000 for property acquisition. However, the owner has taken the property off the market so the park plans are on hold.
