LWGMS-Giddens School

Seattle, Washington

SCOPE:
Campus master plan

STATUS:
Completed 2016

CLIENT:
Lake Washington Girls Middle School

Johnson+Southerland worked with the Giddens School (pre-school through 5th grade co-ed) and the Lake Washington Girls Middle School (grades 6-8 girl’s school) to develop a conceptual site plan on a property in the Rainier Valley to co-locate their facilities. The project included detailed programming and needs assessment for both schools, identifying program elements which could be shared, review of zoning and building code requirements, and an inventory of surrounding properties.

The schools intended to share an outdoor playfield, parking, gymnasium, library and theater/music spaces while maintaining separate classrooms. Both schools wanted to maintain their distinct identities with separate entries, lobbies, and student/parent gathering space as well as utilizing the street frontage of the city-block-sized property to have separate drop-off and pick-up areas. The Giddens School required separate play spaces for the pre-k, kindergarten and grades 1-5, while the Girls Middle School needed space for exterior gathering, outdoor art and science activities.

By maximizing the building envelope, the final site plan included reserving one-quarter of the site for future development, provided each school with a distinct entry on different levels and rooftop amenities for science, gardening, and other outdoor activities. The playfield is provided as a lid over the parking garage.
