Passage Point is a transitional housing facility where women leaving prison are reunited with their children and can practice parenting and self-sufficiency skills in a supportive environment. Seventy-five women and up to one-hundred and fifty children occupy this rural site, formerly a drug rehabilitation center. In 2005, Johnson+Southerland completed a Vision Plan for Passage Point, introducing the idea to the community. J+S teamed with the Miller|Hull partnership to complete the Master Plan in 2006 and continued the project design with a multi-disciplinary team in 2008. Focusing on outdoor program elements, J+S proposed play areas designed for children from toddlers to teenagers, developed community gathering areas as well as private reflective places, addressed security and transportation issues, and terraced courtyards as a humane solution to below-grade unit entries.
